In this country, statutory legislation which protects species includes:
Species Protected in England:
- The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
- Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996
- Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000
- Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006
European Protected Species:
- The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994, amended 2007
The highest level of statutory protection for a select number of species is covered by the Habitat Regulations. Please refer to these documents for further details if carrying out work in habitats that support any of the listed species. In addition, the UK Biodiversity Action Plan covers a large number of habitats and species that are considered to be in a sub-optimal state and which require specific conservation action in order to protect them. Well known examples are the otter, great crested newt and water vole, but there are many more animal and plant species included. If you are unsure whether the above legislation affects any work operations you wish to undertake, please don't hesitate to contact us for advice.
